Biography for Steven Lee Stinnett, CHt

I’ve always been a quiet, peaceful guy. As a kid I read a lot. I also obsessively built and painted model airplanes. I think I had the largest private air force in the world.

In painting all those models, I discovered that I really liked painting. So I become a fine artist and illustrator. I made a living with graphic art and illustration for 25 years.

And I read a lot. To draw something well you learn about its structure, its history, or purpose. For instance, if you understand how a skeleton fits together you can draw a believable body.

Some of the books I read were about hypnosis and the subconscious mind. They said essentially the same thing, that if you understand how the brain processes the information it perceives you can better understand how it builds a pattern and that all behaviors are driven by patterns of subconscious thought! They also claimed that you can change those patterns.

Eventually reading and illustration bought me a condo in Tarzana, California which happened to be right around the corner from the Hypnosis Motivation Institute. I wandered in one day just to check it out and instantly connected to the ideas they presented. I signed up for their training. About two months into the year-long course I felt as though I’d been handed the secret instruction manual for life. It was that profound. It was the manual they should have given me in art school, if not in the third or fourth grade.

Now I do Hypnotherapy professionally as well as illustrate. I’ll always love art, but the cool thing about Hypnotherapy, aside from its almost magical power to transform, is that, like art, it’s very quiet and peaceful. Which is why it suits me right down to the bone. As I mentioned, I like quiet and peaceful.

Experience

Much of the experience behind my training comes from dealing with, and helping others deal with, addiction. Which is to say, dealing with fear, and all of it's debilitating and corrosive effects. Even the quickest glance of the country confirms that it's not an isolated problem. Even in it's lighter shades – procrastination, mild anxiety, avoidance – fear is still the name of the beast.

My training, in and outside of HMI, my experience within myself and in working with others, feels like ongoing match of wits between our higher selves and that street-fighting primitive emotion – fear. Luckily, there is a solution.
