The Event

On March 17, 2020, America awakened to a worldwide pandemic and discovered the true vulnerability of their jobs, careers, and their freedom. When the Governor of the State of California announced the Safer at Home mandate, the door to nearly every freedom we have known and have taken for granted was instantly slammed shut like the cold clang of a steel door. For the first time in our lives we experienced extended periods of solitary confinement with our spouses, families and for many, perhaps the scariest of all, with ourselves.

At first, we were able to delude ourselves that this would be like “a day or two.” It just didn’t seem that real, after all, everything looked the same out the window. It was like a snow day in Los Angeles, California, a one-week vacation from work and school. But then, one week became two and two became three. And then the ugly reality began to creep in, the dark clouds began to form, the rain began to fall, and the truth slowly trickled out from our TVs and elected officials that this was NOT going to end anytime soon.

Day by day, the light at the end of the tunnel began to look further and further away. Will there be no beach trips this summer, no senior graduations, no strolls at the mall, and for the single folk, not even a glimmer of hope for love or companionship for months? No, it can’t be true, surely something is going to break soon, so we cling, with utter powerlessness to the only connection to the outside world we have left, the News.

The News

Like a car crash scene, we just cannot look away. We tune in everyday hoping for a breakthrough, for some surprise announcement, a cure, a vaccine, a mistake in the projections. We keep it on all day, in the background, like those 1980’s subliminal tapes, sending repeated messages to our subconscious minds, “death counts”, “contagion curves” and “escalation projections”. It is impossible to measure the psychological impact of Government officials predicting on TV, “100,000, no 200,000 deaths in the next two weeks”. Beneath the talking heads, headlines scroll nonstop, “not enough masks”, “far too few ventilators”, “hospital tents in parking lots”, “mass burials for the unclaimed dead”.

Day after day, night after night, we listen to scary stories, stare at scary pictures, and absorb scary words from recognized experts and respected authorities. And while every fiber of our subconscious mind signals us for “fight or flight”, there is in fact, nowhere to go, no action to take, we are 100% powerless. Facing the reality of zero options to act, all we can do is stuff it down, busy ourselves, slowly exhausting every precious resource, paper towels, toilet paper, even our Netflix options grow slimmer and slimmer by the day.

We wander from room to room, each day indistinguishable from the last. Our homes begin to mystically transform into small rafts on a turbulent ocean with nothing but the cold heartless Corona Sea for 1,000 miles in every direction. And all the while our TV blares “rougher storms just ahead”.

What is COVID-19 Information Overload?

We are in fact in a war, attacked by a foreign enemy, who our TV tells us grows stealthier and deadlier every day. An invisible killer who lurks on grocery store shelves, and doorknobs. Any human contact, even people we know, our kids and our spouse become suspect. Out of fear we interrogate, did you leave the house, did you talk to someone? Every thought we have, every word we hear, every warning we read, all send message units to our brain, scary message units that burrow into our minds, breeding more and more fear.

Where do all these scary Message Units go? Unlike happy messages, fear messages trigger a primal survival response. They go to the core of our instincts to run or fight and do whatever it takes to survive. This part of our brain, our autonomic nervous system, is the part that controls our breathing, heart rate and blood flow, all of which needs to alter in a life or death situation. And because all of this is taking place at a level below our awareness, we call this our subconscious mind.

Consciously you can use logic and reason to keep moving through your day. At a subconscious level however, the level that controls your body, emotions and your underlying beliefs about the world, those fear messages accumulate, slowly taking control.

No, you do not have a fever and yes, you're breathing is alright, but emotionally, mentally and spiritually you're slowly sinking. It’s a silent killer, a killer of hope, a killer of joy, a killer of humor and motivation and the ability to concentrate. It can cause sleep disturbance, food cravings, restlessness and agitation. This is the COVID-19 Information Overload.

HMI Offers FREE Private Hypnotherapy Sessions via Zoom

Zoom Therapy Session

How can HMI help your COVID-19 Information Overload? Well, HMI cannot change what’s on the news. We cannot stop everyone you know from taking about Corona. We cannot make it safe for you to now leave the house. But what we CAN do is help you to access the subconscious part of your mind and release the “fight and flight” overstimulation of your autonomic nervous system and negative toll it takes on your mind, body and spirit.

HMI’s College of Hypnotherapy, a non-profit, nationally accredited educational institution has been studying the effects and treatment of Message Unit Overload for more than 50 years. Our sole focus is the study of subconscious behavior and the mind-body connection. Think of hypnosis as a key that will allow you make the connection between mind and body. With that connection we can redirect your suggestibility and focus, that has been temporarily hijacked, back to something healthy and good, like gratitude and love, sleep and laughter and all the many positives in life.

For HMI, hypnosis is a specialized channel of communication that creates an opportunity to send a powerful message to your autonomic nervous system. Through words, images and imagination we will help to guide your nervous system from feelings of fear to safety, anxiety to relaxation, and hopelessness to happiness.

And, as your subconscious mind begins to accept those messages and those positive suggestions begin to flow from your mind to your body, physical feelings of tingling and buzzing start to flow through your limbs and a deep sense of relaxation and peace gently washes over you.

It is then you will find that your mind has finally grown quiet. This quietness, this respite from the Corona dialog is your reward and your release from the COVID-19 Information Overload. And for many, after building and storing tension and anxiety in their muscles and organs for weeks, the release can be astonishing. So often it isn’t until we experience the release that we then perceive how much tension there was and how much it was affecting our every thought, movement and mood.
