Presenting Issues: Weight Loss, Self Confidence

Description: HMI Instructor and hypnotherapist Susie Kappas uses hypnosis, along with practical healthy living techniques to help Tammy lose weight and keep it off and to gain more self-esteem in the process. Tammy wants to lose about sixty pounds to get down to 150. She gets winded just walking upstairs and performing her regular job, and she wants to have energy to live her life and do things with her family. She's a nursing assistant and, although her hours are regular, she works a lot. Consequently, she eats a lot of fast food and unhealthy snacks throughout the day. She has recently switched from the evening shift at work to the day shift, and Susie feels they can use that to their advantage in the treatment. When Tammy loses weight, she says she'll feel better about herself. She's triggered by stress and having tempting food in the house.

Techniques Used: Susie has Tammy mention good things about herself: being happy, being brave, taking care of her children. Susie recommends adding healthy snacks with protein. After the suggestibility questionnaire, she has Tammy do the heavy-light technique. A progressive relaxation follows with suggestions to release old habits and patterns and accept new habits and patterns to guide her to her goals. The staircase technique comes next with imagery of Tammy being at her ideal weight, having reached her goals, feeling well. Susie gives positive suggestions to reinforce Tammy's good feelings, as well as to describe Tammy's new healthier lifestyle. Susie concludes with a suggestion for venting dreams.
