Practice Builders Episode 99 - Ted Moreno, CCHt
Presented By: Ted Moreno
Guest Speaker Ted Moreno, CCHt and HMI senior instructor, returns to share a different perspective, but networking is about farming, not hunting. Building a practice means planting seeds and cultivating relationships until people know, like, and trust you. For practitioners who feel uncomfortable promoting their services, networking often feels like a sales task.
Through conversational role plays, Ted demonstrates how to ask questions, notice personal details, and give someone your undivided attention before introducing your work. When someone mentions poor sleep or relationship stress, he shows how acknowledging their experience creates a natural opening to explain what you do without rushing to book a session. He also explains how exchanging business cards and sending a friendly follow-up keeps the connection open without pressure.
An introvert himself, Ted describes practicing a more outgoing networking persona by raising his energy, smiling, and showing up as someone he would enjoy meeting. He recommends rehearsing a clear introduction, so it flows naturally when someone asks about your work. His practical message is that the listening skills practitioners use with clients also help build relationships outside the office, while consistently showing up communicates reliability.
For this week’s challenge, Ted invites listeners to locate a nearby networking chapter and the next Chamber of Commerce event, put an event on the calendar, and find the gumption to attend. Bring business cards and wear a name badge.
Take this week’s challenge to keep learning, growing, and strengthening your work with clients.
