Practice Builders Episode 98 - Shelby Brown, CCHt
Presented By: Shelby Brown, CCHt
Guest Speaker Shelby Brown, HMI Associate Instructor and CCHt, shares how examining secondary gain, listening to feedback, and taking purposeful action help hypnotherapists move beyond familiar patterns and toward their goals.
In this episode, Shelby explains secondary gain as the benefit someone receives from returning to a familiar comfort zone, even when that choice interferes with what they consciously want. Asking what may be gained by remaining stuck is an important step toward change, yet recognizing the pattern matters only if it changes what you do next. Shelby applies these same methods to her own life by considering what is within her control and identifying actions that will move her forward.
Shelby also encourages listeners to treat what happens as feedback, look at a situation from more than one perspective, and use what they learn to choose an effective next step. She connects confidence to stacking small wins rather than waiting to feel completely ready or looking outside themselves for permission. For hypnotherapists, that may mean practicing a skill, changing something in their environment, or taking one small action toward the practice they want. Her question is simple: is what you are doing taking you closer to or further from where you want to go?
For this week’s challenge, Shelby asks listeners to avoid making negative statements about themselves or their abilities for three days and to question whether their choices are moving them toward their goals.
Take this week’s challenge to keep learning, growing, and strengthening your work with clients.
