Synesthesia: The Neuroscience of Metaphor

Presented By: V.S. Ramachandran

This video features a stimulating and informative lecture on synesthesia (“intrasensory mingling” or “the mingling of the sense”) by neuroscientist V.S. Ramachandran and the role it plays in creativity (metaphors) and understanding the brain.

V.S. Ramachandra is a distinguished Professor in UCSD’s Department of Psychology, and renowned for his wide-ranging experiments and theories in behavioral neurology. He is also the inventor of the mirror-box to treat phantom limb disorders, which he also discusses in detail in this video along with other experiments he’s devised to research synesthesia as a concrete sensory phenomenon based on cross-wiring in the brain.

This lecture was so fascinating! Perhaps especially the times where the professor goes off topic to teach about related things, like phantom limbs, numbers, transsexuality, etc. There was a lot of humor too.
