American Hypnosis Association – Practice Builders Power Hour

Practice Builders Episode 101 - Bruce Bonnett, CCHt

Presented By: Bruce Bonnett

Bruce Bonnett

Guest Speaker Bruce Bonnett, CCHt and Harvard educated lawyer, returns to explore how a respectful no protects trust and keeps a caring relationship professional. Helping clients does not mean saying yes to every request. Drawing on his legal background and experience writing the ethics code now used by the American Hypnosis Association, Bruce explains why small exceptions deserve attention before they become familiar habits.

His personal stories reveal how working with neighbors creates complicated dual relationships and how protecting confidentiality sometimes means tolerating an awkward misunderstanding. He identifies warning signs of boundary creep, including favoritism and trying to fix a client’s life outside sessions. When clients ask him to make major decisions for them, he brings the focus back to their autonomy: it is their journey, not his.

Bruce also offers practical approaches to cancellation policies and discussing session length and fees before surprises arise. To maintain emotional boundaries, he describes a brief pre-session reminder and imagining a protective shield or bubble. These practices support caring involvement while helping practitioners avoid taking responsibility for every outcome.

For this week’s challenge, Bruce shares an idea inspired by a performer’s use of angel cards: write seven qualities or activities on slips of paper, place them in a cup, and draw one each day. Spend at least two minutes expressing that quality or doing the activity to bring fresh intention into daily life.

Take this week’s challenge to keep learning, growing, and strengthening your work with clients.
