Practice Builders Episode 103 - Laura DeWitt, CCHt
Presented By: Laura DeWitt
Guest Speaker Laura DeWitt, CCHt and HMI senior instructor, returns to explore how that first conversation builds hope and helps both practitioner and prospective client decide whether working together feels right. A consultation call is more than a chance to fill your calendar.
Laura treats the call as a pre-first session-session, beginning with a quiet environment and undivided attention. She recommends allowing up to 20 minutes, gathering relevant background, and asking about previous hypnosis experiences. Someone who had a difficult experience may need reassurance before they feel comfortable trying again. The call also gives practitioners an opportunity to recognize when a referral would be a better fit.
Rather than delivering a full explanation of Theory of Mind, Laura offers a brief introduction to hypnosis and leaves the deeper education for the first session. She demonstrates a natural transition into scheduling: ask when the person would like to come in and open your calendars together. She also encourages practitioners to practice stating their fees aloud and maintain clear boundaries around texting.
Her throughline is intellectual empathy, meaning to recognize how meaningful the issue is to the person calling, and acknowledge the effort they have already made by seeking help.
For this week’s challenge, Laura invites you to bring that intellectual empathy and compassion into every prospective-client call. Give the person your full attention, hold space for what matters to them, and notice how the connection shifts when booking becomes secondary to being present.
Take this week’s challenge to keep learning, growing, and strengthening your work with clients.
