Biography for Hal Alan Linebarger, PsyD, MA, CCHt

Hal Alan Linebarger enrolled in graduate school at Azusa Pacific University, Azusa, California. His major was “Marriage and Family Therapy.” He completed the program in two years and interned at the San Jose Hospital Inpatient Chemical Dependency Unit followed with a new position at Peninsula, Hospital, Inpatient and Outpatient Chemical Dependency Unit, Burlingame, California. In addition, Hal signed up for training in chemical dependency treatment, family systems treatment and more. Shortly thereafter, he took his Marriage and Family Therapy state licensing exams, written and oral and passed.

Hal moved to Oakland, California where he worked part-time at Summit Medical Center, Outpatient Chemical Dependency Unit and was invited to participate in a research project at the Mental Research Institute, Palo Alto, California. The research was about “The Alcoholic Family in Recovery,” A Developmental Model. The authors were Stephanie Brown, PhD and Virginia Lewis, PhD Pub. 1999. The “good news” is, if an individual wants to help himself and is willing to follow through with a recovery plan they will change for the better. In addition, if the alcoholic and his/her family wants help the whole family can change for the better. And there is a road map for the normal process of recovery for the family similar to the long-term process of change for the individual.

The Mental Research Institute. Hal learned about a treatment model for psychological trauma. It was called “Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing” (EMDR). He signed up for a two-part training with the Mental Research Institute in Palo Alto, California. He completed the first three-day training that taught him how to identify and label a client’s disturbing memories (Negative Cognitions) “I am a loser,” emotions and body sensations and replace the negative beliefs with positive beliefs and emotions (I am a winner). He learned that if you trace back to earlier memories that feel similar and negative belief feels true, you can desensitize and reprocess the client’s negative events and beliefs including earlier memories and childhood memories.
